If any of you follow me on twitter or facebook you will know that this week I’m loving Radio 1 and in particular Scott Mills. I have my reasons though…there is a bilingual song playing on Radio one!! Its cheesy and overplayed in the rest of the world, though I have to admit its one of my favourite christmas songs (don’t act surprised, if you’ve ever been to one of my classes you know how much I love a cheesy catchy tune!). The point is its so rare to hear anything in a another language on mainstream radio, and this song which is so popular around the world has never become part of our christmas repetoire in the UK.
It makes you wonder why we are so insular, its not as if we don’t have a lot if immigration or lots of British citizens who have English as their second language not first, as a nation we just haven’t valued language in the past and are still struggling to do so now. We are slowly dragging oursleves into the future, where monolinguals will most likely be few and far between (albeit confined to those raised in the British Isles?). The more we travel the more we open up the world, the more music and other popular culture will cross borders. Surely this can only be a good thing, broadening our minds and horizons. Carry on playing ‘Feliz Navidad’ Scott Mills 🙂
And on that note, Feliz Navidad, Joyeaux Noel and Merry Christmas to you all, I won’t be blogging now until January as I’ll be enjoying some time with my gorgeous girlies, see you in the new year!
